The Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has a world-wide reputation in computer graphics, computer-aided design and manufacturing, process control, robotics, operations research, numerical methods, advanced information systems and networking. SZTAKI is full member of ERCIM (European Research Consortium of Informatics and Mathematics) and Centre of Excellence of EU in "Information technology, computer science and control". The researchers involved in the project belong to the Engineering and Management Intelligence Laboratory (EMI, www.emi.sztaki.hu). EMI's main profile is in handling complex production and business systems operating in uncertain, changing environment, with special emphasis on process planning, production planning and scheduling, agent-based production control, as well as production network management problems.

The Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation (LMS) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics, in the University of Patras, Greece, is involved in a number of research projects funded by the CEU and European industrial partners. Particular emphasis is given to the co-operation with the European industry as well as with a number of "hi-tech" firms. LMS employs approximately 70 researchers organized in three different groups: Innovative Manufacturing Processes, Advanced Human-Centered Design Techniques including Virtual Reality, and Production Systems Planning, Control and Networking.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is one of the two Swiss Institutes of Technology, educating more than 6500 students in all engineering disciplines and participating in numerous national and international research projects in all engineering domains. The Computer Aided Design and Production Laboratory (LICP) of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering of EPFL is involved in various fundamental and applied research projects in the CADCAM area in collaboration with Swiss and European industrial partners, mainly SMEs. The teaching and research mission of the LICP is to improve the sustainable development of products, to increase the productivity of manufacturing systems and to optimise the operation of product production and recovery systems. Our laboratory is pursuing its research along the following three research activity lines: Knowledge-based Product Modelling and Optimisation for Manufacture/Assembly/Remanufacture, Advanced Manufacturing Information Systems and Planning and Scheduling of Manufacturing and Remanufacturing Systems. LICP is also involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching course at EPFL in the areas of design for X, multi-body dynamics simulation, computer aided design and computer-aided manufacturing.

RLW Navigator is a three year, €3.9M, project funded by the European Commission under the ICT-Factories of the Future programme.  The project has fourteen partners and began in January 2012.

The goal of the project is to develop an engineering platform for an emerging joining technology from the automotive industry, Remote Laser Welding (RLW), that will enable the exploitation of this technology and ultimately support other joining processes.
